Default 79 to 81 244 robin engine transplant

I found a 1979 EZGO 3 wheeler with a 244 robin engine and I am wondering if that engine will bolt in to my 1981 EZGO 4 wheel cart with out modifications. Also do you think the rear ends are the same I haven't seen the 3 wheeler yet. I am just trying to get some information before I make a 2 hr. trip to look at it.

Thanks

Chuck

Everything should be identical.

Thanks

Depending on what parts you need and where you are located,Holeysocks is looking for a complete 2-stroke rear.Look him up(post:really need help). The only actual difference between the 3 and 4 wheel is the front-end,front sheet-metal/cowl.Everything rear of the front-cowl is identical.

Hmmmm. not so sure. The 79 had points, the 81 was electronic. I'm not sure what the implications are with regard to the ignitor and the general wiring of the ignition. I think that due to the differences in the crankshaft it would not be possible to convert the 79 to a pulsar so you would have to rewire the 81 to run off a points based system. This is probably not a big deal but perhaps you should be aware of a possible issue. Between those years the starter / generator changed from internal to external so you may also need to change the wiring on the 81. In addition the fact that the crankshaft assembly, the voltage regulator/starter relay and the internal st/gen stator & field are no longer available for the pre 1980 engine would make me feel a little twitchy about investing in this project.

Good points Dave, forgot about the ignition change. But points is easy enough to wire up(got all the parts on donor to look at)and actually an easier set-up.The Starter/Generator:Just install existing brackets and use the external set-up.Points work or don't,External Starter is easy to get parts for.

Hi Dave I did some research on the 79 concerning the internal starter then call the owner and ask if it had a starter on the top of the engine and he told me that it was so I am thinking ???? well I don't know what to think. If indeed the starter is on the top it must not be a 1979 perhaps is there a chance that it is late 79 and have a 80's engine? How could this be explained.

Thanks

Chuck,
I guess it boils down to what you want to do with this ?79? As I said my main concern would be the lack of parts availability, for example if the big end is shot then the engine is toast. Now guys are always getting their dates wrong so maybe he has not got a 79. Maybe he could send you a photograph of the engine. That would save you a two hour drive.
