I may be interjecting a little late in this thread but, a sand rail coilover suspension would not work at all unless you really strip and do a major fab! I will be converting my sandrail to a long travel and I will be using 16" rear shocks and 12" fronts. 18" shocks would be 38" long when extended and 20" collapsed... Just my $.02

Well I ran the numbers and I need a spring rate of about 80 lb/in. I need the extended length to be about 22" and the collapsed length to be no less than 16". I've found a couple of manufacturers with sets with about the right length/stroke, but the spring rates are way too heavy (150 lb/in or higher).

steve, I would guess those Empi coil overs are pretty weak..... you are right, it's tough to find something less than 125... I bought some rated for 100, lowest I could find.

You can use 100 lb rated springs. It will be all left in the shock valving to adjust rebound and softness. I will give you a website that sells coilovers extremely cheap! They will give you extended and collapsed length and spring rates. I would think that and 8" coilover would be more than plenty for a cart... The pitch and angle of the shock dictates the amount of travel and softness to your ride. with a 16" shock in the rear, I will have a total of 28" of travel on my sand rail. With even an 8" shock on a cart, you can make about 14-16" of comfortable travel! Fox or King can't hold a candle to the prices of these guys! Here you go FOA SHOCKS.com Keep us posted!!

Thanks Tonka...I'll check that out. In my case, the shocks are in-line with the wheel travel and at the same distance from the pivot point as the axle centerline so the stroke and lengths of the shock translate directly to the wheel travel and limits.

I have a welder and a hammer so anything is possible but I like the fact there is no lever induced stress on the frame. I already have significantly more horsepower and torque than it was intended to support. Granted it may be able to take a lot more, but I'd rather not induce the next "weak spot in the chain" by moving the suspension point. Granted, that would increase the spring rate requirement and shorten the needed shock length so it would make this job much easier.
