Silly EZ-GO Golf Cart Designers - You call it!
I just bought my first cart and am quite intrigued by the character and purpose/usefullness of these neat little machines. The cart was fully customized before I bought it so I can't take credit. The more I drive it the more I dream of someday building my own custom cart. (That in itself would be an entirely different discussion on it's own.) On to the topic of the post.
The reason for my post is to hopefully gain some insight on "why some things are the way they are". My cart is a custom lifted EZ-GO with gas engine. Here are my comments and questions; 1) On the brake pedal there is a large momentary contact switch wired to the rear brake lights. Correct me if I am wrong but I noticed from seeing pictures of others carts this is "normal". Am I the only one that thinks this is a rather silly design ? Operating this cart requires that you put your foot on the switch in order for the brake lights to work. Seriously? I mean the brake pedal itself is rather large making it easy to miss the switch. A simple normally-off momentary contact switch (heavy duty), mounted in a bracket somewhere near the brake lever, that closes once the brake pedal is pressed would be a much more sensible design. On a safety note, "missing" the switch while braking (no stop lamps) could cause an accident. 2) While depressing the gas pedal with the parking brake engaged it causes the brake to release. I find this rather silly. Why would anyone want it to work like that? Is this typical of other golf cart makers or just EZ-GO ? Did the designer not realize this is a safety hazard? I liken this feature to a "launch-mode". Now Being a golf cart I can see why an actual golfer may want something like this; chase the ball, leave cart in gear, press parking brake, look for ball, get back - hit the gas and go. Are all golfers really that lazy? 3) The transmission lever is rather awkward for several reasons. One, you have to bend-over to reach the thing. Why is that? Two, There is no mechanism to make it easy to shift the transmission in neutral. A practiced back/forth balancing is required to get it to stay in neutral. Is this just my golf cart or is this by design? Why would they design it that way? Rather silly if you ask me. Is this silliness found in the design of other golf cart manufactures ? Happy Carting! notagolfer |

1 the momentary switch keeps the lights from staying on when parked and running the battery down.
2 the break releases so as not drive off and burn up breaks or belt. 3 the lever close at hand also requires a shorter less complicated cable routing that lasts well and saved money in construction. the transmissions are forward and back neutral in between simple to build. Yep most carts are like that. |

I have the same switch. Is the center red triangle shaped light supposed to stay illuminated continuously or turn off when not in use? Mine was installed for me , cart was delivered through rain and the delivery/tech didn't it remember it staying illuminated at the shop after install. Thought maybe water got in housing and jumped a circuit.

Re: Silly EZ-GO Golf Cart Designers - You call it!
Your right about these silly things engineered in the carts. I guess it makes it easy to get in, drive off, then get out & swing without turning keys & pulling e-brakes.
The one that kills me is how the shifter & brake cables are routed under the engine. Obviously they don't think anyone is going to be wheelin & get these hooked on a stick or rock. I guess it's silly on us for using these things like an ATV. |

Ever since crawling under the cart to get a look at things, I have been thinking about re-routing those cables. |
