Default '94 DS Gasser sporadic running...

My brother-in-law (aka Capt. Stoopid - long story) has a '94 DS that sometimes will not run unless he wiggles something under the engine. Then it runs great. It never dies once it's running, but sometimes won't start again.

What is he wiggling, and what does it do?

Can he remove the item, clean it up, reinstall, and expect the issue to go away?

Thanx guys.

Deja vu?

He is probably messing with the RPM limiter and ignitor wires. That's really the only thing down to the front of the engine that has wires.

Yes, both of the previously mentioned pieces are bolted to 1 bracket with comes off with the removal of two 10mm bolts.

best just to replace both of them (unless you find poor connections)

Thank you oh Steamy Dinkleberry! Now we know what we are dealing with!

At least we know what the items are called anyway! He reports that there is 1 bolt which holds the bracket on which keeps loosening up. It seems this bolt/bracket may provide a ground to these components. Any truth to this observation?

The bolt towards the dip stick holds the ground strap on. Its only purpose is to provide a ground for the RPM limiter to send to the ignition coil when 3800 RPMs is reached. He should really remove the entire bracket and check the connections. Clean them all and clean the bracket too so it can provide a good surface for the ground strap. The bolt on the flywheel side is somewhat hidden but it's there.

This is the igniter. It is mounted on the back side of the bracket:

This is the RPM limiter:

If "Capt. Stoopid" is feeling industrious, he can remove the cooling duct shrouds and replace his ignition coil with a 1996.5+ one with the igniter built in, ditch the little problematic one, and hook his RPM limiter back up. If it still does it, then the RPM limiter is bad (it's the most likely culprit anyway) and he can replace it too. That way, he will be set up like the 1996.5 and up carts which rarely--if ever--give problems in the ignition system. Just be sure to get the ignition coil from a reputable place! BU ones will last a few months and he'll be spending the same money again on a good one. tungpo1 or Tom@Dixie Sales can get OEM ones.

Thanx NoNo. I will direct the good Capt. to this thread.

As for the deja vue, this message was posted on 3 forums. I got the best info from here at BGW (fastest too). That is a good thing!

Thanx for the help!

Did you post it over on GCC? I know I've seen it somewhere before. I thought it was here but I must be mistaken.
