Default Batteries wired backwards

My son decided it would be a great help to me to install the new batteries into my golf cart I purchased last night. However, when doing so he connected the positive wires to the negative and the reverse on the other side. He said there was a brief puff of smoke and some sparking before he was able to disconnect the battery cables from the battery and now it will not do anything. What is the most likely thing to have happened to the cart and how can I run down the problem. I have limited electrical wiring experience but can follow just about any instructions given.

Check to see if the Reed switch is blown. To do this, check for 36 V positive at the small red wire coming out of the back of the charge receptacle. If no 36 V + is present simply connect this wire to the battery pack main +.

It sets not it will have to dig deeper.
