Default car starts in high speed

I am new to golf cart ownership. I was given a 48 volt club car. I think it is a '86 model. it has 5 solenoids with wire coils attached to the top. The car worked fine until a terminal on the last solenoid broke off. I bought a new solenoid and installed it. Now, when I press the pedal, I have to push it almost all the way to the floor and then it squeals the tires and takes off. Is it possible that I connected the small terminals backward? there were no markings on the old solenoid to go by. I currently have the s side to the extreme passenger side

Let me be the first to welcome you to buggiesgonewild.

Now sit down and I'll tell you they never made a 48v cart with 5 solenoid speed control. Your cart was designed for 36v operation and it will not handle 48 volts. You are going to melt one component or another until you go back to 36v or go up to solid state speed control.

is that why, when the cart was running, I could smell the smell of hot wires. Also, before the terminal broke, it ran fine for about 3 months

The good news is you said it was given to you. Go to Scotty's site cartsunlimited.net and then get Scotty to recommend what you need to have a nice cart. I did mine and was very happy. My cart is a 90 CC and was 36v. I went to 48v and it is a blast. Good luck

6 8v batteries and 5 solenoids? Something doesn't add up

i agree with the others about 48v burning up 36v parts
but i would go back to 36v cart for now
it sounds like the speed limit switches in the speed box are bad
here is your wiring diagram

Crash, to put a 36v. pack into an already electricly strained system may be the least expensive way to go, but I would be inclined to use that money towards a conversion. Please correct me if I'm missing something.
