Default 88 marathon gas rebuild.

ok, I have 70 psi in compression. I guess its onto rebuilding my engine. Does anyone have a link to an affordable kit to do this? Maybe a write up about it? I did a couple searches and didnt see anything.

Default Re: 88 marathon gas rebuild.

You have some choices to make. First do you want to repair/replace just the top end or the entire engine. Ball parking the costs from memory I guess $180 versus $360 ish.
Before you answer that reach into the engine, grab the drive clutch and try to lift the engine up and down. If you feel even the slightest movement between the crankshaft and the crankcase then you should consider a complete overhaul. If you decide to do just the top then do you want to replace or repair. If you have a small engine shop locally you could get your cylinder re-bored and an oversize piston. I simply bought he new kit and that worked for me. Incidentally they are all made in the same factory in India so just go for the best price you can find (but be nice to BGW and check the sponsors first).

If you decide on just the top end then I earnestly recommend that you also buy a set of crankshaft oil seals and replace those as well. The good news is that they are relatively cheap, the bad news, you will need to remove the clutch and the flywheel, both of which you will need special tools for.

The biggest single tip is to make sure that you put the piston in the right way around.

Let us know what you decide to do, there are lots of people here that can walk you through this job.
