Re: G9 lost compression
thanks again guys for the input.
we are gonna keep the g9 as other family's at the campground have "his" and "hers" carts at the campground. Plus its nice when family are visiting to have more than one... once I get my g9 back running properly I can maintain and upgrade as needed. Wife is having serious withdraws not having a cart. So having a new one for her will solve that issue. it will allow me to have time to tinker with the g9 and make my "MAN CART" don't have to have any female opinion on how it looks... |

That sounds like a good move on your part. Happy wife is always on my agenda in one form or another.

Re: G9 lost compression
Update: got the cart back from the small engine specialist. the main issue.. low oil.. omfg... can't believe I didn't check to see that my oil was way low... or that the "golf cart" specialist that took two weeks to adjust the valves and put the push rod back on didn't notice this either....
2nd item: rocker arm was worn allowing the rod to lift up.. the mechanic put a set screw in to hold it down until parts can be found. 3rd item: cart runs fine but smokes pretty bad.... mechanic says that it will need to be bored out or find another motor to put in.... he said that the whole motor needs to come out to bore the cylinder as it is all one piece on this... I'm starting my research into options for what to do with this cart this winter.. rework or replace.... as always the opinions here are extremely helpful... |

Pulling out that motor is very easy. Don't let them convince you that it's a huge job because they have to pull the motor. I could have that motor out in under an hour. However, boring and rebuilding could cost some bucks. Probably more then $500. You should look in the BGW for sale section. Sometime there are good motors for sale there at reasonable prices.

Re: G9 lost compression
How low was low? And if nobody took the cooling plastic off to clean the fins, your problem is not over.
Also, you should search what to do about "no oil to the top end". Need to remove the oil fill cap, hold a rag over the opening, and blow air back through that oil line going up the back of the motor. Or more than likely, there is still no oil getting to the top. Then change oil. ONE quart ONLY!! Motor needs to come out, be cleaned then put back in, but with the smoking problem, damage has already been done. |

Might be a good time for the "man cart" to get a big block installed. Vegas Carts sells the whole plug and play setup.

Re: G9 lost compression
If I might give a word of advice here?!
Go to the very last page of "Gas Yamaha". Start reading from the very back, all the "old guys" on here, pionered all this stuff! They invented most of this stuff! Smallblock, Crash, Spriddle, Groundpounder! There's more, but I cant rememmber names right now. Anyway, read what they did, follow what they say to do. When Smallblock posts, (I don't care if its about lillys), I read it!! We (gas yamaha), are very fortunite, to have 2 Yamaha techs on here (cgtech and smallblock450sl) that come in here often to keep us always learning members in line. Anyway, golf carts are like VW's very easy to work on, once you understand them!! |

low enough that the mechanic was surprised it wasn't damaged worse.... I was able to get the shroud opened enough to clean out the cooling fins.. it wasn't too bad. Definitely need to pull the motor out.... looking at options right now.. I'm in Michigan.. anyone have any suggestions on a place that specializes in these engines that I can contact? since my garage is filled with kids play stuff and I can't even get the cart in there it looks like I'm not going to have the time to tackle any of this stuff myself at home.. thanks again for the feedback |
