1985 club car ds making knocking noise on flat ground

I just bought a 1985 club car ds and I noticed when I'm driving on flat ground I hear a knocking noise and not sure if it is coming from the engine or from the rear end but it does go away when I go up a hill. The other thing it does is lose speed when going up a hill but if you stop in the middle of the hill and start again, it pulls the hill much better. Does this make any sense.

Pull the drive belt off from the cart and run the card. If you hear the noise still, it is the engine. If you don't hear the noise, it means it came from the rear end.
