Default Brake replacement problem

So my problem: I have a G1 that I just put new brake shoes on and now I cannot get the drums back on. Drivers side I can get the drum on but it is pretty tight and the brakes are rubbing decent on the drum. Passenger side, I cannot get the drum on without a hammer...
- I loosened the brake cable via the nut under the cart attached to the brake pedal to give some slack.

- the adjuster screw is turned all the way out on both sides.
- brake shoes are fitted nicely in both top and bottom slots of brake assembly
- The only thing i can come up with is maybe i was shipped the wrong part/shoes... but besides the pad being thicker then the old ones (as it should be ) the old and new ones look identical to me.
So is there something i am missing - maybe some other type of adjustment?
I am officially out of ideas, so I come to this fine forum seeking some help.
Thank you,

a side note/question: I know i have a G1 but am unsure of what year it is exactly. How does one tell? cart # is J10-015339 can you tell by this?

535.. it would appear that you have a 1980 G1 with the serial number you listed

79/80/81 G1's have the manual adjuster on top. Take off the rubber cover (if still there) and back the adjuster off to compensate for the new brake lining. Then readjust so there is a slight drag when turning the drum. PS- as noted above, as long as you received J10 shoes...not J55.

Make sure the lever moves free all the way, mine would not and had to take that apart and get the crud out. But they sure worked nice after that. Of course make sure you don't have a huge lip in the drum but carts usually don't get that much wear. Right, if they are the wrong size you have to fix that first.

ya the adjuster screw is turned as far as it will go out. I dont suppose anyone has a picture of J55 shoes so that i could compare the ones i have to a different kind. The original shoes look identical to the ones i just bought though... except the pad is thicker - but it is a brand new pad so it should be thicker then the old worn out ones....
