Traditional USB operates at 5v output. But the newer "USB Quickcharge" can operate at 5v, 9v, 12v, and 19v, the level of power negotiated by the device accepting the power.

these ports are factory and have 5v 2a on the front, so i think i will buy a 5v dropdown.

If you are thinking of just getting something like a "lm7805 linear regulator", know that most all devices require some signaling on the data lines to accept a charge (sometimes achievable with just a resistor, sometimes not).

The USB power uses only the two outside pins.
If this is a "charge only" port, a 200Ω resistor soldered between the two inside pins (D- and D+) will give you the best chance of charging above 500mA. The old standard was just shorting D- and D+ but not all devices recognize that method now. Unless you are doing it for fun, just buy a automobile USB charger from Amazon. |
