89 gas club car k12 motor wont start twice
Hi Guys,
I have a 1989 gas club car with a kawasaki k12 motor. It will start and run great then if I shut it off it wont start until I wait like an hour. I replaced the CDI unit thinking it quit when it got warm, new carb, new fuel pump, new fuel and air filters. It has great compression, the manual calls for 100lbs and it tests at 98lbs warm and cold. When it wont start it still cranks and has spark and is definitely getting fuel. Idle mix screw is set at 1 turn out. I have tried 1 1/2 and 1/2 turns out no difference. If I let it sit for an hour, it will start right up. Any ideas. Your help is appreciated. The cart was donated to the Animal Shelter and they could really use it. It is full of oil (needs changing) and new gas. Thanks, Mitch |

Re: 89 gas club car k12 motor wont start twice
How much oil is in it? My first thought is that the oil may be overfilled and getting into the vacuum pulse line that powers the fuel pump. If oil gets up high enough to somehow get into that vacuum line, I can see how it may take awhile for the oil to drain back down out of the hose before you can start again. Worth a quick check.
How long will the motor run when it does start? Are you just running it in neutral in the shop? Or can you actually drive it around for awhile? Make sure you take that vacuum hose off and clean it out. It's the one the comes up and connects to the fuel pump at the bottom. And for the record the stock motor in a 1989 Club Car would be a Kawasaki KF82 motor (not a K12 motor). |

Springbok, I thank you. I replaced the vacuum line last night and it had oil in it!
Just a little toward the bottom but I will change the oil and put in the correct amount 40 oz. Thanks for info on the motor ID. It has to be the original motor (famous last words). Thanks again Mitch |

Thanks Springbok for the motor info. I tested the pulsing coil and exciting coil under the flywheel and they test way out of range (bad) according to the club car shop manual. Any ideas where to obtain these? Might they be just rusty/gunked up under there?
Thanks/ Mitch |

Here's one on eBay if yours is testing outside the limits and is bad:

Also, the KF82 motor is also known as the 341cc if you're ever searching for parts. The KF82/341cc was used in gas Club Cars from 1984-1991. In 1992 Club Car started using the OHV motors such as the FE290.
