The thing is, the contacts have to line up and be flush other wise you have a loose connection same as a loose connection on a battery post. Bad connection generates heat and ultimate failure sometimes with smoke and usually with a burning smell.
The handle can be hard to rotate depending on your strength or age and lots of times it annoys females who complain so the husband loosens the nut to make it easier and then down the road --failure.
The caddy shifter is just a longer handle which makes it much easier to turn. Works surprisingly well and not expensive.

The other solution is reversing contactors. More expensive and eliminates the handle altogether in favor of a rocker switch like what is used in sepex carts. An elegant solution that modernizes the cart. There is a kit for it. Involves some rewiring.

That makes a lot of sense. I'll look into the caddy shifter. I never had an issue, but you're exactly right, my wife complained about it. I just chalked it up to being an old used cart.

Also, go with a HD F/R switch.

This is the heaviest duty HD F/R switch on the market: https://www.cartsunlimited.net/f---r--switches.html
