Motor Mounts and Lower Gasket
Looking at replacing the motor mounts on my 1987 ezgo gas cart. They are a sloppy and weather cracked. I read that you need 4 mounts for this cart, I was looking at it I only see 3. What one is wright 4 or 3?
Also I have replace the lower gasket on the head 2 times already. I see it is leaking again. What could cause the gasket to keep blowing out and leaking? |

Re: Motor Mounts and Lower Gasket
Hi Tim,
The manual says "If any of the engine mounts need replacing it is recommended that all four are changed". Unfortunately the manual does not show a picture so I can't help you with the location of the missing one. Do you mean the lower cylinder gasket? Are the bottom nuts torqued down correctly? They should be at 24 foot pounds. Other than that the only thing I can think of is if the cylinder flange or the crankcase top was warped This would allow the pressure to escape past that thin gasket. It should be relatively easy to see if you dismantle it and look where the oily stain is. Dave |

Re: Motor Mounts and Lower Gasket
I look the cart over last night again and see 3 motor mounts.
Yes the cylinder gasket is leaking did not have time or wanting to lay in 8" of snow to see if all the nuts are tight. If I do the motor mounts I will put a new cylinder gasket in and see if any thing is warped. Thanks Dave |

Re: Motor Mounts and Lower Gasket
I think mine also has 3,been a while, not sure. They are riveted to the cradle. When you did the Head-Gasket did you torque it evenly and criss-cross tighten?I've seen people run the bolts down and tighten as they go around and this will warp the head. When you pull the head, check it with a straight-edge in multiple places across the gasket-surface.Minor warpage(under .010")can be sanded out with Crocus-Cloth on a piece of glass, heavy lexan,or a heavy steel-plate(something that is known flat and won't flex.)Place the head on the sheet of cloth and lightly but firmly sand in a figure-8 pattern for 10-20sec.,then look at the gasket-face,you will see high and low spots, continue sanding in the same manner until even. You can take a mild-cut flat file and draw-file the top of the cyl.lightly to make sure it is even also(make sure piston is almost all the way up,so filings don't enter ports).Hope this helps.

Re: Motor Mounts and Lower Gasket
it'll be awkward as hell and might require an extra set of hands but it should be possible to jack the cradle and get at them ... The tough part is going to be getting the clearance to drill out the old rivets. Here's where the 4 are on my cart, and I haven't seen (yet) any difference in any of the 2-stroke Marathons I've encountered:

Re: Motor Mounts and Lower Gasket
Remove the starter/generator and lay it to the side(with wires still connected)remove belt,fuel/oil-lines,cables,etc.Remove 3 mount-bolts thru swing-arm.You can remove the engine, exhaust, and cradle as one chunk,Lift by exhaust and twist a little to clear everything. Then you can remove the motor from the cradle on the bench, floor, etc.Much easier that way.I do them alone but help isn't always a bad thing.Hope this helps.
