Default Negative Voltage on Cart Frame

The cart is a Club Car DS 1996 Non-Regen, 48Volt. I have had problems with the charger running for extending periods (14 to 16 Hrs.). Have ruined 4 batteries. When I started checking I found that I have 40 to 42 Negative Volts on the cart frame and all of the other metal parts. My local Club Car dealer has bascially thrown up their hands and said they don't know why. Anyone out there experienced this?

It is usually just leakage due to acid which is conductive. Clean everything very well and it should not be a problem.

I've removed all the batteries and cleaned the battery box and the coated it with undercoating. All of the heavy cables are 4AWG and I cleaned both ends with a wire brush. While the batteries were removed I checked the frame and the negative voltage was still there. Any other suggestions.

okay, no batteries hooked up, charger not plugged in and you still read negative voltage?

How can you determine that the voltage is negative or positive when you have the batteries removed?

. . . I am assuming that nowhere on the cart is a negative cable connected to the frame . . ???

Good point, I had a reading of 40V and I assumed it was negative since all the other readings with the batteries in place were negative.

. . . only way I get a negative voltage reading on my battery is when I place the positive VOM probe on the negative terminal and the negative VOM probe on the positive terminal . . . .

Do you have any thing such as a radio, lights, connected where you have attempted to use the frame as a ground?
