Default motor

I talked to the guy about the my motor today and he said that it runs good after he adjusted the valves. But the compression is 85 in each cylinder. Does that sound right for a Lawn Mower engine. I told him how much I thought it should be (150-180) and he said it would blow a head gasket and that these types of motor only run at 85 or less psi... What should i do? What is the actual compression right after being built? Thanks
