Well, the old pistons were blank on top and the new ones have a 50. So I take it therein lies the problem?

yep. Local shops usually charges 65 a cylinder to bore.

Yikes! Well there ya go... If it were me, and I'm no expert, I would take the block to a reputable machine shop and have the cylinders measured and bored appropriately. If the originals were stock you may not need to go all the was to a .50, maybe the .25 would be better. That way you still have some leeway down the road for a future rebuild if necessary. If you look in the shop manual it tells the allowable tolerances for the cylinders. You may find that you can go back with stock pistons and new rings.
