Default Battery Voltages High?

After seeing the state of charge chart, I just checked by 4 Trojan 12v T1275 batteries with C18 date code. Cart (2015 RXV) has not been on charge or used in 15 hours.

Ambient temp is 85 in my garage in FL. Voltages are as follows

12.92
12.94
12.95
13.00

51.81 Total
Voltage from positive on battery 1 to negative on battery 4 is 51.7VDC

Is this out of whack or do I just have really good batteries?

Check the electrolyte level. Might be a little low.

Only the water is lost (converted to hydrogen and oxygen gasses) during charging, so the acid concentration of the remaining electrolyte gets stronger, which ups the voltage some.

Also, the SoC charts are based on an average of a statistically significant sample (30 items or more), so some of the test items will have a bit higher voltage while others have a bit lower voltage than the average.

Your batteries are only about 0.2V above the average even if their fluid levels are correct, so there isn't need for concern. Also, they are all within 0.1V of each other, which is a good sign,

Thanks. Checked all 24 cells and all look to have at least 1/4" of water above separator plates YET all below MAX LEVEL ring on case. I haven't had to add any water since purchasing the cart 6/6/20/

That is probably why they are reading high. Might be a good idea to top them up since the water evaporates quite a bit in hot climates in addition to the normal electrolysis loss.

Only use distilled water.
Only fill fully charged batteries (The electrolyte expands during charging and will overflow if filled when discharged)

Adding water will drop the voltage some, so recharge again after topping off, also the charging helps mix the electrolyte.

That will likely take they close to the SoC chart voltage, but remember the charts are a guide rather than an absolute.

Check fluid levels ever couple weeks or so to determine watering frequency needed for your cart.

JohnnieB,

To top them up do I fill just below max level ring? It looks like current levels are maybe 1/4" below max level ring but hard to tell

See ya back in a month with "leaking batteries". I never fill up to the bottom of the ring.

And, keep in mind, any juice that ends up on top of the battery is acid thats permanently lost from the original fill. Electrolysis & evaporation doesnt consume, or make acid, it only consumes water. (That's why distilled water is the recommended top-off fluid)

I was below the ring on every cell so hopefully no "leaking batteries".
