Re: Question on solder and crimped cables
Has anyone ever used a hammer style crimper like this?
http://www.franklingolfcar.com/mobil...C4853D318793FF I hate to admit it, but back in the 90s when I was running my old resistor cart I made cables by starting the crimp with heavy pliers and then lying them on an anvil and tapping them down with a ball peen hammer. It won't make me mad to call me a redneck. I'm sure they lost some power, but they worked. I got my last set from Scotty. His are a little nicer. |

Re: Question on solder and crimped cables
Cable ends put on with the hammer type, the plier type, the ratchet type and most of the inexpensive human powered hydraulic type swaging devices are the ones that ought to be crimped and soldered.
Here is a video that explains what a good crimp is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qYZFxQ8Pxw IIRC you need upwards of 12 Tons (24,000 pounds) of pressure on the crimp to to achieve a "Cold Weld". The HC-131-C in the video costs about $500.00 without dies. However, as CG says, you can make some usable cables with the hammer type. |
