Default 36v voltage reducer is hot

I understand that this should happen when the part is being used, but should it get hot when nothing attached to it is running? I have it hooked up to my LED headlights but the lights were off, and it was still hot. Did I do something wrong?

tyhuck, without knowing what reducer you have, or how it is wired, or what you consider "hot." I would unhook it from the pack until you know what is wrong.

this is the one I got. Wired the yellow and corresponding black to the lights and the red and corresponding black to the batteries, per the instructions on the back. The 12v side is wired to a rela to control the lights.

For safety and avoid damage to anything else unhook it, then troubleshoot.

Unhooked. The temp was such that if you touched it it would make you jerk your hand back, but would not cause any burn. Caused discomfort but no immediate pain upon contact. Didn’t hold my hand there to see how hot it actually was. The 36v side wires themselves are not hot, nor is the relay or the 12v wires.

OK. If you wired it correctly FROM THE START, and no mishaps along the way, you have a bad reducer. Do not re-connect it.

Im sure the fact that it was a $13 unit is the most likely culprit. You get what you pay for. If I need a new one, whats a good brand to look for?

Get one from cartsunlimited.net. The $13 ones are hit or miss every time.

tyhuck, it is a holiday weekend, and according to your other thread you have a new pack.
If you need lights for a couple days just hook the switch to 2 six volts and you should be Ok.
