Question on running wire from key switch to voltage reducer

I power up my digital voltmeter by running a wire from my key switch (when turned on), I would like to run another wire from the key switch to power up my 25amp voltage reducer and then go from the voltage reducer to a fuse block with negative bus. I want to do this so that when my key is turned off it will turn off all my accessories on the fuse block.

My question is would this be too much load for my key switch?

If it is ok to do what size wire should I use?

Aussie, I can not say for sure, but I believe Gorno was doing this as well, and it would work for a little while, but in the end the load was too much for the key switch, you might be better of using a separate rocker switch to control it.

Actually, if you use a relay, you can easily use the keyswitch to activate the relay which would allow the power to flow through to the voltage reducer. I've installed hundreds of them and never had an issue with one yet. It creates virtually no load on the keyswitch but allows the operator to control power to the voltage reducer and other accessories with a single switch point.

I saw your post about wiring a voltage reducer to the ignition with a relay, so that the reducer only has power with the ignition on. Can you tell me how to do this? I have a '97 yamaha g19 with a 30 amp 48 to 12 reducer. Thanks!

Agreed. The secret is finding a 36v relay because that is the voltage across the keyswitch circuit.

use the relay from a club car charger for this. I forget the part number, but they come in either 36 or 48 volts.

What power do you use to power the key switch?

I would assume not from the reducer............just jump off a single battery?

Secondly, most keyswitches are already powered. The exception being on some Club Car models where they ran a ground through the keyswitch instead of a "hot" wire.

Wiring from scratch...........does the power to a stock key switch come from a single battery of the entire pack?
