Motor controller and Motor match?

Hi,
I have a '78 or so (no ID tag) Club Car that I converted to use a standard issue Club Car speed controller with a multi-step pot. I have it all wired correctly with no loose wiring or anything of the sort. I have had a few people double check the wiring to be sure I installed it as seen in the schematics. The pot is putting out 0 to 5K resistance. I'm wondering if the original motor can handle the DC voltage coming out of the speed controller or if I need to switch out the motor with a newer one? I can jump the motor controller and the motor will of course jump right into high speed. Someone was telling me that the DC voltage coming out of the speed controller is pulsed, almost like a AC voltage and the older motor doesn't know what to do with it...

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Your throttle is the wrong one. You say 0-5k when most club car controllers use 5k-0 ohms. If the controller detects a "high pedal" it will disable the controller until its fixed...at least some of them do.

The motor will work just fine. The old series motor is no different than a new series motor only its older.

A controller acts like a turning a light switch on an off real fast...the faster you switch it the faster the motor will turn. The voltage is always the same, the only thing that changes is the on/off time.

You should be able to reverse the wiring in the pot box to get 5k-0 ohm.

Thanks for the info Roady. I'll switch out the wiring on the pot switch and give it a try tonight. Just curious though... why does the pot schematic (for a CC multi-step pot) tell me to wire it in the 0 to 5K configuration?

I believe there are a few CC controllers that use 0-5k but if your controller doesn't match it won't matter. In other words, your controller may not be for 0-5k multi-step pot.

If its a straight series controller you can wire it many different ways.

Are you talking about this? I don't think that gonna work. try reversing the order and see what happens. (ON JACK STANDS)

Black Curtis controller w/Black & White-2 Wires to Throttle


96 & Newer (Some 93, 94 & 96 cars and all other series cars) use 5K-0 3 wire
Silver Curtis Controller w/Green and yellow throttle wires

1997-2001 Regen 2 PD+ use 5K-0 3 wire
23 pin connector on a GE controller

2001- Present IQ 5K-0 3 wire
16 pin connector (2 rows of on a GE controller

See how it can get confusing.....

If you have the Black Curtis Club car controller the throttle input it uses 0-5K 2 wire

If you have a Silver curtis club car controller it uses 5K-0 3 wire

I have the silver curtis so that explains everything!! I was beginning to pull my hair out thinking it was supposed to be 0 to 5K and then double checking all the wires and everything 3 or 4 times. That's why I figured it was time to ask the experts!

Well, I made the pot 5K to 0 with no success then I switched out the motor controller with a spare with no success.

-Would I have to reset the motor controller somehow (I didn't see any obvious way to do this)?
-I didn't put the diode on the solenoid... will that be a problem with the motor controller?

I'm not using the half speed resistor for reverse so the wires have a straight shot from the pot to the motor controller.

I have 49 volts going to post 1 (when in forward or reverse, the key on, and pedal pressed) and the pot switch controlls post 2 and 3 with 5K to 0 ohms of resistance.

B+ goes to solenoid and A1
B- goes to negative battery post
M- goes to F/R switch

Any other ideas? I would have bet on a reset if I could have found one!
