voltage reducer, need to switch off?

I installed a voltage reducer this weekend. with nothing drawing current it sparked and clearly pulled current at rest. I thought it may kick in only with a draw. I want to control when it comes on and wanted to see what the general opinion was @ this. just grab power at the keyswitch, add a switch or get a three way light switch.

I will check with my meter tomorrow but- is the keyswitch voltage 36v? does the 3 position keyswith throw 36v for the light circuit?

There is 36v at the keyswitch via the control circuit. The second position of an EZ-Go keyswitch has no voltage on it unless YOU put it there, ie: lights.

so the 3 position switch controls the flow of current through 2 lugs? one being supplied power and voltage by the installer the other being connected to the first lug when the switch is put in position #3?
Sounds like grabbing 36v at the switch will be the simplest method using existing parts.

There are 2 separate circuit paths in a 3 position switch. Be advised, adding additional load to the 36v control circuit can lead to problems. I suggest a relay to control ANYTHING added to this circuit, and it needs to be a 36v relay. The secondary circuit can be a different voltage, it is merely an on/off switch.

thanks for the suggestion. I will add a relay. I have a bunch of 12v relays. I will check the voltage range and buy a 36v one if needed. I would just rewire the light switch to control the converter input voltage but I want to add a stereo.
