Default Is this a speed controller or resistor on my 1991 Marathon

I recently purchased a 1991 Marathon and plan on freshening it up. Runs great, has new batteries, but I though about modernizing it abit and considering converting to a speed controller...based on all Ive read. When started inspecting it, I took the cover off and where I would see the drive controls, I assume I am seeing a speed controller, not a resistor. If so, has this cart already been upgraded? Any confirmation or info is greatly appreciated!

Thanks! I didn't know they came either way from 1991. My next question would be do you think it would handle a motor upgrade? I need a bit more torque having back seat and extra passengers. Like I said, everything works good and it runs great, just slows down on a grade with the extra cargo. Thanks again!

More torque requires more amperage delivery to the motor. You can increase torque by upgrading the 300 amp OEM control to 500 amps. This leaves the door open for the aftermarket motor later. If needed or desired.

Which controllers fit the 1991 ezgo, having ttrouble finding parts listed for that year.

OP, what upgrades have you pulled trigger on if any and what were results?

The least expensive control you can get is the 500a Curtis on ebay. I would go to 48Volts with 2 more 6v batteries for way better torque also.

You need to get the controller for either 36 or 48 volts so get the 48 add the 2 batteries in your bag well in back and hang on!

The stock motor is great for running 48v.

Just between you and me I ordered a Chinese Curtis copy/knockoff and they sent me a genuine Curtis for 189.00 to my door.
Maybe they ran out of stock or something and it was a lucky break, but thats what I got

PM me if you want some more information on my 91 marathon conversion

You'll need a HD FNR, solenoid, larger cables, and controller. ScottB sells all of these, and his controller and solenoid will operate at your current 36 volts, and when it's time to change batteries, you can go to 48 volts by changing the diode and charger. Call ScottyB and tell him what your current needs are, and if you plan on upgrading to 48 volts and/or using larger tires in the future.
