Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
Progress! (Well some anyway)
So I jumped the micro switch and that at least prompted the solenoid to click loudly. (So MS needs replacing) But nothing further down the line (the the starter motor or whatever it's called did not turn over.) Next steps? |

Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
Premium gas does not mean ethanol free. It means higher octane rating for high compression engines. They add more ethanol to increase the octane rating.
What battery are you using? A good battery should show 12.7 volts. Then when you make the solenoid click, the voltage should only drop about 1 volt. Get a set of jumper cables. Connect them to the battery. With the direction switch in Forward do this. connect the negative cable to A1 on the starter. Touch the positive cablee to F2. The starter lugs are stamped for identification. If your battery, and starter are both good, it should turn over. |

Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
This is great. I'll grab my jumper cables from the mainland tomorrow.
Question though. I can ID the F2 lead but the others are hard to access and see. Would you know if A1 is the lead on the other side of the cylinder ? Or one of the 2 leads on the end of the cylinder (in which case I will have to figure out a way to visualize the stampings) |

I don't know without looking, and I am on my way to work.
This is your wiring diagram. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/attac...n-retrofit.jpg EDIT: There are four big wires on the back of the FnR switch. The one on the driver's side is connected to A1 |

Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
Well this is moving along nicely.
I jumped a good battery to the starter and it seemed to turn over (albeit slowly. It's been so long since we ran this thing I've forgotten how fast the starter should turn) Can you help me press on? At this point we need A) a new micro switch and B) a fresh battery with 12.7+ volts. Next? I would!d guess: - Fresh sparkplug - fresh fuel - new gas lines if needed. What else? Clean the carburator? Are there other steps I am missing to see if this actually turns over? Peter |

Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
Yes, the carburetor, and fuel pump need to be cleaned.
Spraying carb cleaner in is NOT cleaning. It needs to be taken apart. Every brass piece needs to be unscrewed, and cleaned. The float, and needle need to be removed, and cleaned. You need a new fuel filter too. Remove the air cleaner, and see what kind of nest has been built in there. |

Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
False alarm (well semi false) actually on the microswitch. When I tested it while still installed, there was no continuity.
But when I removed it I found the contact screws were corroded preventing good contact. How do I clean those so they connect well? Sandpaper? And how do I clean the brass pieces in a carburator? |

Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
Fine sand paper, or wire brush on the switch.
Tiny little pieces of wire, or torch tip cleaners on the carburetor parts. When it's apart you can blow air, or carb cleaner through to see if the orifices are clear. |

Re: 1990 Marathon, stopped running (stuckstuck island)
Well, I got it off.
Can I rinse the whole unit in hot water once I've scrubbed it with degreaser or carb cleaner ? (It actually doesn't look that dirty.) And do you know what these two yellow tubes do? Air feed? |

Don't rinse in hot water rinse of with gas or break cleaner and that thing in nasty you need to take it apart and clean the inside and all the jets not just degrees the outside
