Default Differential Marked "HS", need more low end

Bought a nice 99 Freedom from a guy at a good price because it would not go up hills well. Cart is lifted with 22" tires.

Put new clutch and belt on, checked compression, still would not go hills well. Cleaned off the rear differential and found it is marked with "HS" in big letters. I am assuming this is a non-stock High Speed Rear End?

I bought the cart to fix-up and sale, so cost is critical. Of the options below, what is the most cost effective way to get the low end torque I need:

1. I have a 2014 gas cart with stock rear end and tires. I could swap rear ends out if the are compatible? Looks like a lot of work. The smaller stock tires with HS rear end should lower my gear ratio and still give good speed on the '14.

2. Never Mind on this one

3. Can I simply change a gear or gear set in the rear end?

4. Can I lower my gear ratio by changing out on or both of the clutches?

Any suggestions are appreciated

Question #2. You will lose reverse if you swap in a 2 stoke rear axle- so that might turn off lots of buyers.

Perhaps you could work out a trade by posting it in the "for sale" section and offering to trade for a stock axle.

Rats, you mean I can't run the 4 stroke engine in reverse? LOL. Sorry, was not thinking there.

Personally, I'd swap out the stock 36 degree driven clutch for a 28 degree and throw on a shorter belt, that will compensate for the lower rear end gearing at about a $220 cost and a half hour of your life - as versus pulling the rear end apart and installing stock 12:1 gears (about $300 and the better part of an afternoon *if* You know exactly what You are doing) ...

As to option #1, not compatible, sorry.

I am worried that the 28 degree clutch will not be enough compensation. Bruce at CPP said he did not think it would be enough.

Is there a way to calculate the change in gear ratio from changing to 28 degree clutch? Does the overall size of the pulley change or does it stay the same and just stay in low gear longer?

Have you or any other members out a 28 degree clutch on a cart with HS rear end and big tires?

The red cart in the pic, 28 degree clutch (stock spring) with 27077-G02 belt, 8:1 High Speed Gears and 23X10.5-12's lifted with Long-Travel Kit. My property is a retired Ski Area (so no lack of SERIOUS hills and terrain) - This cart will lose traction with 2 people before it will lose power (IE spin the tires)

BTW, that is the same belt I have now, I have new Drive clutch, so if I go 28 degrees, I should be same as you. To be 100% sure, I guess I would need to verify my gear ratio, I would guess on a Freedom model it would not be any higher than 8:1?

Just verified my rear end ratio, it is a 6:1 high speed. I am 25% Higher geared than you are, do you think the 28 degree clutch will still do the trick?

I'm curious - what type of hills are you talking about. From all the reading it sounds like it was setup as a street cart from the dealer and someone tricked it out to ride in the dirt. Are the 22" tires dirt tires? The tires listed below work great on a cart and stand about 19.5 inches tall. I have 8 of these tires and rims and for the price you can't beat them. Cheaper then a new gear set or clutches.
