Default Film between the controller and heat sink

I’m building my wife (yes it’s for my wife got to keep her happy) an EZGO TXT it’s a 36 volt with a Curtis controller. I decided about 2 days ago that I would completely overhaul this cart for her. So I’ve stripped it down to the frame and I am painting everything like new. The question, what is that film between the controller and the heat sink? Is it important (I’m assuming it’s some kind of insulation or something). Can I buy it to replace it? I stripped it down and was washing the heat sink and that film washed off.

YES you can replace it.....its a conductive pad. obviously the heat sink is made of aluminum which conducts heat away from the controller. the pad makes it so there is better conduction of heat AWAY from the controller. It might take a little hunting to find the stick on pads, which makes for a easy install, but you should be able to find them at a good cart supply store that deals STOCK controllers.

EDIT: even easier....I did a quick google search for "CONTROLLER HEAT SINK PADS" and found some of different sizes on AMAZON. only $10
