Engine stop relay location
Does anyone know the location on a 1997 G16? I'm still trying to troubleshoot my no spark at plug problem and think it could be in the relay or I burnt up the T.C.I. unit while trouble shooting when I grounded my spark plug on the engine. Anyone have any guesses? Cranks over fine but no fire.

Re: Engine stop relay location
Dang, was hoping for a quick fix. The TCI needs to be correctly gapped, my trick is to use a match bock cover, gaps it perfect and alot easier than 2 feeler gauges and trying to tighten it down at the same time. Dave

Re: Engine stop relay location
That makes 2 of us. Now I'm going to admit how dumb I am about carts. Is the T.C.I. the coil or the ignitor since I could not find anything listed as a T.C.I. in the vendors sites. I'm an old hotrod buff but new to carts. I'm guessing the ignitor as it seems to have an air gap setting like lawn mowers. Jim

Re: Engine stop relay location
I have rarely seen Yamaha ignition components go bad, most times it is a bad connector of break in the harness ground. The parts are expensive, please double check everything before you buy.

Re: Engine stop relay location
The G16 and up "magneto/TCI" ignition system is very basic compared to earlier "CDI" Yamaha ignition systems. The blue wire-12 volts positive and the black- 12 volts negative supply the TCI with power. Sorry I didn't mention that earlier for testing. In my experiance, The TCI's go bad when they get hot, then they lose the capacity to spark, they cool down and will spark again till they get hot, very rearely do they just fail. As for Yamaha parts being expensive?, ya some are out of site. The TCI (part#jn6-85640-01-00) lists for 107.60. Now how expensive is a part if your cart won't run? If you think I was leading you to buy a expensive part, that was not the case at all. Crash....You should come to work for me....seems you know alot.

Re: Engine stop relay location
Hey small block, Hope you didn't think I was implying you were pushing parts. You've been around here long enough that I know that isn't how you operate.
I just finished with a G14 that the owner replaced the pulse coil at 57.00, the ignition coil at 49.00 and the ignitor at 169.00 because it wouldn't rev over an idle before it started spitting and backfiring. Float was set way to high flooding the high speed side of the carb. I didn't know exact prices until this cart, That's why I noted the bit about the costs. |
