Basic's 101

Fuel, Air and Spark along with correct compression, all in proper proportion.

Why not give Scotty a little bit more information:

Take a compression check first and see if it matches what you should have with your engine.

If it runs better without air restriction then it's running too rich and the extra air is leaning the mixture down.

You have jets for Air and Fuel and even the slightest blockage can cause your engine to miss fire or not run at all. Did you try a rebuild kit with all new gaskets, jets and float with needle valve and seat if equipped? Also most have a float adjustment as well to meter the proper amount of fuel in the bowl if setup that way. Gaskets must be sealed properly as well in order to complete the proper fuel/air mixture and prevent vacuum leaks.

In other words... try one thing at a time to see where your problem is. Remember it's not rocket science, it's just a few basics that will get you back running again.
