If the radio/cd player is fried, I'd definitely buy a different brand voltage reducer.
Apparently the one you've got is lacking an over voltage protection device (Crowbar) on the output.

I guess all the engineers capable of designing gadgets like the SR-71 using slide rules, are all retired or dead by now.
