84 marathon
I had a friend give me a stock 84 marathon. My first problem is that when I let off the gas it backfires through the exhaust does anyone know why it would do this. I was looking at the lift that Dave bought and was wandering how its holding up. Second I would like to know what the stock speed with gov unhooked is and was looking for around 25 to 30 mph can this be done with this cart and motor or will I have to do a big block conversion. All help is greatly appreciated. O and I have rebuilt the carb cleaned tank and replaced all gas lines and filters and replaced the spark I will remove the oil tank and premix gas and do the hei conversion as I have many spares from my race car and other upgrades that y'all think I should look into. Thanks and sorry for the long post.

Re: 84 marathon
Most of the time when it backfires like that, is because the butter fly in the carb is not shutting all the way, it need to be adjusted

Re: 84 marathon
My 85' had the govenor unhooked,and 22"-tires,it ran 25mph on a decent flat-run.To swap to a Big-Block,you will need a 4-stroke rear-axle from a 91-94 Marathon(it bolts-in).Your stock rear doesn't have a transmission,since the 2-stroke runs backwards for reverse.Hope this helps.

Re: 84 marathon
Thanks for all the replays guys my does not have the spring on it and I saw where someone laced two pen springs together so I will try that and anyone have a lift they would recommend I like the one Dave showed on eBay for 45 dollars and I was gonna order a set of badlands 20x10x8. I think 25 mph would be about perfect I will check speed on stock tires with a GPS and let everyone know what the speed is and if the spring fixes the backfire or if I need more help. Thanks again guys

18mph is about right on stock tires.

Re: 84 marathon
Hello, I am "a" Dave that bought the cheap block lift kit and I am completely satisfied with it, not that there is much that can go wrong. If you do this mod you will have to raise the back end very high to fit the springs and the spring blocks. If you do not remove the pipe between the carburetor and the air filter you will rip it. Once the cart is back on its feet you can refit the pipe and you are good to go.
