G2 blowing gas out carb, wont run
Got in a G2 that I'm tinkering with for a private individual (I do the repairs for my golf course, but we have club cars) that just refuses to run. First thing I realized when I got started was that it had no compression. After I took valve cover off and worked the valve-train around a bit, I now have good compression (over 100 psi on gauge).
Also had the starter-generator checked out by local shop just for good measure. When I press the gas pedal, you can see gas vapors coming out of carb air intake, almost like the motor is running backwards (blowing it out instead of sucking it in). Motor wont hit at all. I can take spark plug out, pour a little gas in, and it will hit this way, fills the air box with smoke though. Anybody have any suggestions? Im at my wits end with this thing . Thanks |

Re: G2 blowing gas out carb, wont run
I had the same problem and it turned out to be a stuck valve which was making it blow exhaust through the carb and intake

You should have more like 155 to 175 lbs compression. I'd think a valve is sticking or out of adjustment. Adjust bolth intake and exhaust to .004 when the engine is cold. Rotate the engine several times to check the gap.

Re: G2 blowing gas out carb, wont run
Small block is right on as usual. I would take the head off and check the valves/springs/etc if that does not work. Turn it over by hand and make sure both rockers are moving as they should is a simple test. Sometimes you can hear the air leak out a bad/open valve when you turn it over by hand and its on the compression stroke. Usually it would be really obvious if something were broken in the block, unless it was put back together wrong.

Re: G2 blowing gas out carb, wont run
Sorry to jump on an old thread here, but I'm having a similar issue. When I try to crank the cart, it blows smoke/gas vapor back out of the carb through the intake. I know very little about working on golf cart motors and would like to start learning. Could someone give me some tips on checking the valves. What would I be looking for? Can i reuse the valve cover gasket if I remove the cover (and its still in good shape). Would it be obvious that something is not operating correctly. I understand the basics of how the valves work, just have never worked on them.

I usually find the exhaust pushrod out of place (caused by no proper maintenance on valve adjustment). And no, if you reuse the gasket, itll leak.

I'm trying to figure out if it is something I can do myself, or if I need to take it to a shop. I would much rather do it myself. |

Yes, you would just loosen the adjuster, put pushrod back, then properly adjust.

Re: G2 blowing gas out carb, wont run
The first time I adjusted my valves I had this same issue. Due to my inexperience I loosened the exhaust rocker way too far and didn't realize I had moved the push rod out of the lifter and set the valve lash with the pushrod bound up. When I tried to start it, same thing. After taking the valve cover back off I saw my mistake, corrected it and it fired right up.

Re: G2 blowing gas out carb, wont run
Awesome. Thank you guys! I'm waiting for a valve cover gasket to arrive and I will give this a shot. Hopefully the gasket will be here by weeks end, and I'll be ripping around my property.
