It will stay at idle with it removed or bypassed?

Yes. If the wires are tied together, the engine will start when the key is turned on. The idle screw on the carb may need to be adjusted.

If my engine gets a little warm or hot, it won't shut off. I have to lift the seat, use a glove and apply pressure to the clutch cover to get the crankshaft to stop turning and shut the engine off. If the engine is cold and I drive the cart for 1 minute, it will cut idle for a few seconds then cut itself off. For this reason, I am not suspecting a problem with the kill/start switch under the pedal (I put a new one in 4-5 years ago).

I also put an aftermarket carburetor in 3-4 years ago. Wondering if there is something wrong with that causing the engine to "diesel" - run on it's own without spark plug.

I am a novice mechanic but a quick learner. Just can't figure this out yet - any advice on where to look?

It could be the throttle on the carb is not closing all the way. The stop screw may have to be backed off a little.

searching for a related but opposite problem. My engine won't stop running, so I followed the kill switch wire back to the engine, and noticed that a wire was not connected to the engine. So when the kill switch is engaged (when the gas pedal is not engaged) no signal is getting to the engine to kill power.

Problem is, I have no idea where to connect this wire. There is a plastic cowling around the engine, I am thinking buried behind there somewhere is a connector for this hanging wire.

Any clues as to where this wire connects? the other wire from the pedal switch is secured to a bolt attached to the engine block (outside the cowling). I am thinking this is ground.
