Tappets with a reseat
I have rebuilt my father in laws kf 82 engine. With no issues. I have started another rebuild on an exact motor. Had to have the valves reseated. Now I am stuck with no clearance between the tappets and valves. I was wondering if there is a way to get them out and measure the distance without the tappets. I think I may be able to hold the valve up enough to get the tappet in and out without removing the cylinder. How easy it is to file the tappets? And is there any easy ways to measure the gap with the tappets out to see where I am at? I would not have a clue on what size to get if I got new ones. I am hoping someone else has done this before and give me some pointers. I do have the book and it says .004-.008 clearance at top dead center on the compression stroke.

Re: Tappets with a reseat
I would take out the tappet caps out and file them down until the gap is right, then i would take them out again, measure them, then i would buy new ones that match the size of the filed ones. Unless you think you can file them perfectly flat. I am sure thats possible but i think new would be easier. I have a 88-91 manual for sale in the parts section if interested. Good Luck
