Ok, so got the motor out, its ugly. I think it was a combination of problems including rust on the spinny thing, as well as the windings. The reason the bolt was freespinning was because the insulator broke which allowed it to break away from the windings (not good I know). I'm going to take it to a electrical engineer friend to get it cleaned up and wired back up. Frankly, i'm amazed it worked at all

Get a thin head wrench or grind down an old one to use on the lower nut.
Most of mine did not fit but I did find one in my old stash of wrenches that would.

UPDATE: got another stock motor. Still had the cutting out problem. But I found the solution with replacing the solenoid. I guess it was heating up and not working properly once hot. Put a new one on and works fine. Although its slower with the new motor, don't understand that one. Top speed before was 14mph. Now just 11-12mph
