Default OBC Explosion

Figured you guys would get a good laugh out of this, so here goes....

I've been working on golf cars for 17 years now (not including tinkering around on our old 93 E-Z-Go Marathon when I was 12). Today something happened that I've never seen in my life. I had a customer drop off 9 chargers to have repaired. They look like they've been drug behind a truck and down the interstate for 15 miles. I'm having to replace the entire case of the chargers and all of the damaged internals. Having to put new cords on nearly all of them. My latest build, a 2013 Refurbished Precedent was my test cart. I'd fix a charger and plug it into the cart to make sure it worked, and I'd add it to the completed stack. On the sixth charger things got a little strange. I installed a new DC cord, new diodes in the back of the charger, and a new fuse. I plugged it into the test cart, the relay clicked, and the OBC literally exploded and smoke went everywhere. Upon further testing, the negative wire on the end of the charger cord ohms out at zero resistance to the positive pin in the plug, and vice versa for the positive wire. After cutting off the connectors on the end of the cord, soldering on the ring and the blade terminals on the opposite wires, and replacing the OBC on the cart with a good used one from a car I put a Lester Summit charger on, all is now right in the world again. The moral of my story, if you're replacing cords on your charger, ohm them out first and make sure they're correct. We don't need anymore explosions. Cheers!

I wish I could do that on purpose when an OBC quits working. Sounds like a good way to finish one off...

Thanks for the advice.

Cross the positive and negative wires on the DC cord. It works like a champ.

Lot of morals to this story, not the least of which is to take care of your charger! I've seen some that look awfully beat up, especially if they're carried around in the cart.

Decided to build this cube for my charger at the campground. Just drive up and plug in at the end of the day.

Are you putting a PowerDrive 3 in that cube? They get VERY hot and require lots of air space around them to keep them cool.
