OBC / Charger issues
Hi all,
I'm finally reassembling my 98 (series) club car after the rebuild. I have a good reason to believe that I damaged the OBC during my work and, sure enough, the charger will not kick on. I've seen a ton of posts about troubleshooting and bypassing the OBC but they all seem to be related to people with a DPI charger. So my question is: is there a way to verify that my problem is with the OBC using my stock charger? I've tried a jumper wire between the black wire on the charge receptacle and the pack negative but the charger doesn't come on with that either. Thanks! |

Re: OBC / Charger issues
Let's rule out the simple stuff first that I have done and the charger acted dead.
1. Is charge wire from charger receptacle connected to pack positive? 2. Charger is connected to a 110 volt power source? 3. What was being done when you think you damaged the OBC? 4. What is the voltage on the battery pack using a DVM? I'm sure the experts will be along shortly to help you figure this out. |

Re: OBC / Charger issues
1. Yes
2. Yes 3. This is embarrassing, but I "expanded" the hole in the OBC with a DRILL to fit my new 4AWG pre-crimped cables through. I didn't know golf carts had a computer back then and thought it was just a piece of plastic and aluminum. Also... whiskey. 4. The total voltage on the pack is currently just over 50. (Is the charger smart enough not to kick on when its over 48 even without the OBC?) |

Do not be embaressed or feel like the Lone Ranger. A few drinks have helped me make some brilliant decisions too.

Re: OBC / Charger issues
I would like to take a drill to my OBC and will one day. I'm sure someone has a used OBC laying around. Lots of whiskey needed working on carts

Re: OBC / Charger issues
Thanks Gents, Glad to know I'm not the only one making rash decisions under the influence.
So now the big questions is, do I get another OBC or a DPI charger? its about the same cost and it seems like people prefer to get rid of the OBC in most cases anyway. Any recommendations on a cost-effective DPI? The project is going well otherwise so far... before and current pics. |

Re: OBC / Charger issues
I will eventually go the DPI route. Sell your factory charger for a good down payment on the DPI

Re: OBC / Charger issues
Scotty b has a real good price on the DPI I got one for my cart and the OBC and charger I have are just fine.
