Default Alltrax xct upgrade questions...

Ok guys it's time to purchase the upgrade but still having trouble deciding what I need or want. I have a 2004 precedent IQ, I have an slightly upgraded motor but it sucks too. I had to buy this motor from a local cart guy because my last alltrax controller, old style, took out my motor due to the throttle jerkiness several years ago. The new motor has a speed magnet and is good on flat, haul *** on downhill, and a snail (horrible) going on any hill. I have 10" rims nothing jacked up and tires are normal size on 10" rims (not sure of height). I live and play golf, no off roading but it's a hilly golf course and neighborhood. Think long slow grade hills. I may upgrade motor down the line but controller first. So my questions:

1. I can't figure out if I need the 400amp or go ahead bite the bullet on 500amp. Need more torque for these hills. I'm tired of the club rental cars passing me on hills.

2. How much does the upgraded 4 or 2 gauge batter cables increase torque. If I got of 400 amp and cables would I increase 30% of torque? That's kind of what I'm looking for?

3. If I get the 400amp then upgrade motor would I get a 40% increase?

4 I guess I'm trying to figure out how to piece the new components over a period of time. If I get a 400 amp and cables would it be sufficient and gain me 30%. Then down the line add motor which would get me 10-20% more maybe.

or

Get the 500 amp and get enough torque out of the gate and wait til the motor gives.

I don't need a speed demon I need consistent speed with torque.

I know there is no set values but your thoughts and experience would be very helpful.

Consider the extra $50-60 insurance and buy the 500a. You can turn a 500a down to 400a for motor life and see how it goes but you cant add an extra 100a of power to the 400a if you decide you need it later. Worst case for you is you laid out a couple extra bucks and have more power than you needed.

For either controller you will need upgraded cables so get 2ga. Again a few extra bucks insurance for not being disappointed.

I also have an 04 Precedent that I converted into a stretch with the Madjax kit. With the added weight I went with the XCT500 and a D&D ES series motor. Carl over at EV drives located in the Northwest set the XCT for my stretch setup. One thing I’d like to do is disable the Regen braking. Also, upgraded solenoid and 2gauge cabling. This is my 2nd setup(07 DS) from Carl and he’s been awesome to work with.

I currently get 24mph with a lot of head jerking torque. The 2gauge cables really lets the current flow.

I had an 05 Precedent in my test fleet. We had a couple of controls and motors in it over the years of use.
For golf and around town all you will ever need is a Alltrax XCT48400 control and 200 solenoid. This unit puts out a peak 460 amps.
Anything more is bragging rights. The stock motor will produce 30% more torque (power) and faster acceleration with the XCT400 plus top speed will be 22-23mph with the FACTORY motor and magnet

Most "torque" motors will still run faster than a stock motor, but will have a 20-40% increase in torque. It's not reasonable to expect the cart to maintain full speed going up a hill, but it depends how steep the hill is.

Sounds like the motor you have right now is a "speed" motor and may just be a re-wind of a stock motor. Limited torque but will get to a higher speed if it has enough room. A true Torque wind motor will have more than enough power to climb a hill, and most will be able to get you to 20mph or a little more on stock sized 18" tires. With a torque motor and stock sized tires, you will be doing donuts in the grass easy.

If you're on hills, go with the 500a controller. This one has more than enough capability for any motor you want to run. The motor field map that is programmed into the controller will limit the power delivery to what's correct for the motor you choose.

Talk to either ScottyB at cartsunlimited.net
or David Hicks at Revolution Golf Cars. Both site sponsors, and both are very well versed in the abilities of many different motors paired with Alltrax controllers.

To get the best out of any new motor/controller combo, you need to have batteries that are in top shape. How old are your batteries? What kind are they? Which charger do you use?

Hey guys thanks for the replies. A couple more questions:
Mine has the control center in the center of the batteries, does a 500 Amp fit in that space with the cover back on?

Do you have to have to cut out sections of the center cover to accept 2 gauge cables. I don't want that area open without a cover, let's just say I've dropped tools there and not risking an arch ruining another controller?

Fairtax, I'm pretty sure your right on the rewound speed motor. Trying to get specs on the motor to know for sure from the MFG. If that's the case can you even increase torque much on those motors?

Just to be clear I know I can't hold speed but going from 18- to say 8 is brutal on some of these long slow grad hills in the neighborhood. More of an announce I want to reduce. I'm for sure going to give the existing motor a go because I'm also buying new batteries and now a new voltage reducer after reading that thread lol.

The Alltrax is water proof and reverse polarity protected. It cannot be covered. It has built in cooling towers which need air circulation for heat dissipation
The 300,400, and 500 are the same size, The same fan fits all 3 and adds minimal bulk. All 3 will fit your cart. The difference between the 200 solenoid and 400 solenoid is not so minor with the 400 not fitting the stock bolt pattern or cable ends.
Again the 400 (460 peak) control and 200 solenoid should be all you need for the use you describe.

Ok Scotty I'm getting your hint. So everything will be exposed under the seat, solenoid and everything or do you mount the xct somewhere else? I assume you suggest 2 gauge cables or is 4 gauge good for the 400?

YEs, the Alltrax goes in the same location as the original without a cover.
For your use use the stock wiring or 4g or 2g. LOL - it's not a stretch limo on big tires with seating for 6.
I'm suggesting 460 peak amps is enough controller for the application and use you describe. The members here tend to get excited to recommend the biggest controller, wire, tire available across the board.
That's my recommendation based on your original statement "I live and play golf, no off roading but it's a hilly golf course and neighborhood" (no lift kit, 2 seater)
