87 DS Differential Problem
So, been away for a long time. The cart this site helped me build has been through a set of batteries and has been super reliable.
Today, on decelerating down a hill it locked the heck up. Going slowly, thankfully. Obviously transaxle related. Was able to back up and it locked up in reverse. After some gentle rocking, it would pull itself again, but with a loud knocking noise. Guessing some teeth sheared from at least one gear. So, haven't pulled it yet, but will. I'm mechanically inclined, and will likely open it up. Can parts be sourced for thus dinosaur? Should I just try to find a salvage rear end and just swap them out? Will later models work in this old gal? Any advice or parts sources are most appreciated. Edit to add this is an electric. 48 volts to a stock 36 volt cart. |

Re: 87 DS Differential Problem
You probably have the 'old style' differential in your cart. I would source a good used 'new style' one and swap it out. I believe it'll bolt in just fine, plus you'll have the modern self-adjusting brakes. The spline count may be different, however (for the motor)- hopefully somebody can come along and confirm this...

Re: 87 DS Differential Problem
Thanks Jake.
I've spotted several new style complete diffs within a 2 hour drive for $250. If the motor will work, I may just go this route. |

Re: 87 DS Differential Problem
Howdy, me again.
If anyone can tell about compatibility of the old 36 volt motor to a newer style transaxle, I would be grateful. I put in a call to TahoeDawg as he is about 2 1/2 hours away. I thought I saw a thread where he may have a few used units available. Thanks in advance. |
