Notice both terminals were negative ones. If the batteries were wired in parallel, rather than seriesl, this would be no problem.

When wired in series the negatives become positive at certain points

I think the should be on the wrench.
Those three batts were very happy to supply all their glory.
Glad you were not hurt.

Rib if you drop a wrench on the negative of the back passenger side battery and the negative of the battery in front of it you have 5 of the batteries in the pack shorted. Definitely fireworks
