It dissipates energy when the solenoid coil is turned off.

I'm not sure of the short term risk of operating without the diode, maybe others can advise.

The resistor protects the solenoid contacts from arcing during closure. The diode protects the controller from voltage spike fly back. Temporary use would probably be ok, but I'd get them on as soon as possible.

Thank you DaveMJ & mgray70

I have not used the cart in the past few days waiting for the diode to arrive just in case.. I disconnected the battery cables and installed the diode as per diagram now I do not hear the solenoid click and the cart does not move either... I tried removing the diode and nothing... I am stuck again...

How do I test the solenoid?

Did you install the diode correctly? It is polarity sensitive. White strip goes to the red wire side. The result of hooking it up backwards is usually a blown pedal micro switch, which is a cheap fix. The resistor on the large terminals are not polarity sensitive, doesn't matter which way it goes. Should have told you that in the beginning.

Thanks mgray70

I followed the diagram that DaveJ posted here
and the white line was towards the positive so I guess that is not the problem I received a bunch of the diodes so I tried another one and nothing as well..

I can hear a small click I think from the pedal box under the cart but I no longer hear the solenoid, should i order another solenoid or is there something else I can test before ordering another one?

Check the voltage between the 2 small post of the solenoid when you press the pedal. If you get pack voltage, it is more than likely the solenoid. If you do not get pack voltage, you should check the activation circuit. Reed switch, forward micro switch, pedal switch, or key switch.

thanks mgray70

I just had time to work on it today... no current at all at the solenoid... I checked all the connections to the ignition key, micro switches, nothing... once I disconnected and reconnected the pedal cables (both) under the cart it started to work... I think it was either loose or it disconnected when I was securing all the cables after the install...

Now it is working and the diode is installed...

I want to thank everyone that helped me get this project completed... I really appreciate your advice and time spent...

Have a great weekend everyone!
