Default 1984 Ezgo Marathon 2 cycle gas(questions new owner)

I just bought an 1984 ezgo. I got a great price on it fortunately. lol the downside is it is need of a rehaul. the previous owner says it runs but won't stay running. I just brought it home this afternoon. I was wondering if this is going to be a simple fix such as a fuel pump. Also alot of the wiring has been disconnected What would be the odds anyone would have a schematic of some sort or manual just so i know what all the switches need and should do. I appreciate any and all information that you all are willing to share. I am a rookie at golf carts but understand small engines and am hoping this can give my family lots of fun for our camping trips. Thanks again. JT

Thankyou for the information. Would anyone know what size battery the cart would require?

Original battery was a 26 group size with the stand up, bolt through terminals - like a garden tractor battery. In the Crown's we carry it's a 26-Z/T. However, the space is large enough for a much bigger battery. I've commonly seen group 24 (top post) or 74 (side post) batteries in there. The cart itself doesn't take that much power, so you don't need a particularly high amp capacity battery, but some go big for extended running of accessories like lights and sound systems when the cart's not running.

Thankyou for the information. I will pick one up after work then I dont plan on having much as far as accessories at this point but maybe in the future during this overhaul. Getting the cart running is first priority of course.

I don't think the 84 had oil injection yet so it'll require a gas/oil premix at a ratio of 128:1, that's exactly 1oz oil to 1 gallon of gas. No more no less and use regular grade gas, Not premium. Spark plug should be NGK-BP5-HS, post pics of that sweet ride. We like pics in here, Good Luck

I finally got a battery and the motor turns over but won't start. After some troubleshooting I found they have a ngk bp4hs instead of a bp5hs. I wasn't sure if that will keep it from starting but I will replace it so it has what it call for. It seems to be getting gas but there is none in the bowl do I need to fill the bowl or pour some in or just try some starter fluid. It has not been started in over a year so I have fresh gas in it now also.Im not sure which way to go next or what to check any ideas would be great. Its not the best looking cart right now but a solid one and a good project that the kids are ecstatic over so it makes it alot more fun.

I see some aftermarket wiring in the dash. Looks like two gauges and a switch.

The one switch is not hooked up and the other switch from what i have found so far connects to a gas gage that is mounted why they wanted to turn it off and on im not sure why they would. I think I need to take the carb off and clean it im thinking the gas must not be getting into it. The fuel pump seems to be getting it to the carb but im going to take the line off and double check that its pumping. I guess start at the beginning lol.

Good idea pulling the fuel line off at the carb to see if it's pumping, NGK 4 is ok too. The 4 just means it's a hotter plug than a 5, but as long as you're changing it anyway I'd get a 5.......

As far as the fuel gauge being switched, I've been wanting to put one on mine too and have given the ways to wire it some thought;

1) Powering it from a constant hot (battery or hot side of ignition switch) it would need to be switched, my idea on that would be a momentary push switch.....

2) Powering it from the ON side of the ignition switch, it wouldn't need to be switched but might become a pita remembering to shut the key off when not going to run it for a while lol.......

3) Powering it from the accelerator micro-switch circuit, it would be active only when the engine is running.......

If you don't mind could you post up a pic or two of your engine compartment and top of fuel tank, I'd like to see how/where they mounted the fuel gauge sensor but also see what you have under there. Your buggy looks a lot like mine did when I got it, it'll be a fun project
