Default Yamaha G2 backfiring and not starting

Hi there. I have a yamaha g2 was running fine, but smelled a bit rich. Suddenly, won't start (although the engine sounds like it catches every now and again) and it's backfiring through the air cleaner and puffing black smoke. Any ideas?

The air box on these need to be completely sealed to run correctly

Puffing black smoke is Way too much fuel issue. Likely a bad needle on the carb float. Check your oil level to see if it is now mysteriously over full, and smelling like fuel.

Ok. So pulled carb out and cleaned. Checked air box for obstructions and re-sealed. Checked spark plug for spark. Check fuel pump is supplying fuel. Plenty of battery. Won’t even try and start. At least it’s not backfiring...

I have it running OK at half throttle. As soon as I floor it it bogs and dies. Is this progress?

Have you ever set valve lash? If not I'd do that and go from there .004"
