Re: Total Charge vs. Toasted Batts.. Which is it
Bypassed the control board and put it on charge... 1 hour later and it is up to 43.5v while charging as measured at the battery pack.... wouldnt expect the full 10hours because all the batts just came of over 20 hours on a 12v charger. I'm gonna stop charging at 45v or real low amps whichever comes first so I dont over charge them. Let them rest and get a SOC reading

At 43.2 and boiling away... why would the voltage drop?

Re: Total Charge vs. Toasted Batts.. Which is it
The "boiling" is good sign. Technically, it is called gassing since the bubbling is due to the water in the electrolyte decomposing into Hydrogen and Oxygen gasses through a process known as electrolysis, rather than turning into steam due to heat.
Keep an eye on the fluid levels so the plates don't get exposed and let them boil. -------------- The decrease in on-charge voltage means the internal resistance of the cells is decreasing. Another good sign. ---------- Technically, a lead-acid wet cell isn't fully charged until the specific gravity of that cell ceases to rise while a charging current is passing through it and that isn't very likely to happen as long as the on-charge voltage doesn't exceed 2.79PC (Volts per Cell), or 50.22V for a 36V battery pack. Therefore the possibility of overcharging is low as long as the on-charge voltage stays below about 50V and we are only going to about 45V. Also, it is unlikely a ferroresonant transformer type Powerwise charger's output voltage will climb to 50V no matter how long it is attached to a reasonably healthy 36V battery pack. However, the eighteen 2V cells that make a 36V battery pack are charged in series and if they are significantly imbalanced, the on-charge voltage across some of the cells could exceed 2.79VPC while the voltage across others was less and the overall average on-charge voltage could be less than 50V. It is difficult to measure cell voltage, but measuring the on-charge voltage of the 6 individual batteries is easy, so just make sure each battery's on-charge voltage is close to 1/6 of the pack's on-charge voltage and none of the batteries are going over 8.4V. |

Re: Total Charge vs. Toasted Batts.. Which is it
It ran for 12 hours and cut off sometime last night due to the timer so I missed the on charge voltage last night. This morning it was only 37.3v..... I will restart it again an d see what we get to.
I know I need new batteries but based off what you've said Johnnie, a new control board should be in order before the batteries. Does this sound right? |

Re: Total Charge vs. Toasted Batts.. Which is it
The 12 hour timer is shutting off the charger, so it won't hurt the old batteries or new batteries either.
I'd try charging the old batteries repeatedly for a few days, just to see what they will come up to. |
