Default 98 DS 48v, Speed Fine, No Torque

Guys,

A camp neighbor asked me to help him with his 98 DS. The issue is that the cart has just about zero torque. Literally, the cart wont move unless its on flat ground or downhill. If the cart is trying to start up even a very minor incline it doesnt have the torque to get rolling. Once it is rolling, speed is fine. Cart is not lifted and is standard with everything. To help ID this model, it has a toggle f / r switch (not a lever), it has a run / tow switch, no speed sensor on the motor, it has a speed controller as well as a single coil resistor (what the heck is that about?).

2015 batts all test good between 8.5 - 8.6v. Pack is right around 51.5v. During a load test, when the cart wont pull a slight grade, the pack drops to 47v or so.

I dont know this particular cart at all but, being that the neighbor is elderly, I want to try to help him out.

Any thoughts?

The solenoid with the coil is likely bad, the coil is likely getting hot. By pass it by connecting both the large cables on that solenoid to the same side. Make sure the speed sensor on the end of motor is unhooked.

Put cart in Tow and unhook main negative and positive battery cable before working on cart. Rehook them when everything is completed then put cart back to run. You should be good to go.

Unless I am missing it this cart doesnt have a speed sensor? There is nothing on the bottom of the motor like there is on my '03 IQ. Again, I dont know this cart at all.

Uhmm.... sounds pretty dangerous to me. Hate to see a cart at full speed with no way of shutting it off.

The solenoid I am talking about is the dynamic braking solenoid. If it fails to close the coil is carrying the high amp load to run the cart. This makes the cart very weak. Don't do what I'm talking about if you don't understand it.

Btw the speed sensor could be removed. The cart will operate fine without one on this model.

That wasnt my post. I am fine with it.

For the record, what does that coil resistor do? First time I worked on a cart with a contoller and a resistor. Is that to limit current from the regen?

Thanks for clearing that up. Put me in the group that wouldn't understand it.

That solenoid and coil on the drivers side of the cart is part of the regen braking system, it is suppose to soften the regen feel when you take you foot off the pedal, with the speed sensor hooked up and that solenoid coil out of the system the regen is very strong like real strong.
