Default Motor testing question(s)

I am working on a 1978(I think) 36 volt EZ-GO resistor cart for a great old friend.
Numbers on the tag read 780313 149852.

They were driving it back to the house after a long day of start/stop/bsing/start/stop ect...and it just quit.

After reading this forum for a few days and lots of double checking I determined that something was wrong with the motor,so I took it apart and found the wire INSIDE the motor that goes to the F2 stud melted off of the stud.

I'm pretty sure I can fix this but the question I have is...

If I put my meter leads on the part where the brushes ride I am showing a dead short to the motor shaft itself and I dont think that is right?

The motor is completely disassembled and sitting on a non-conductive bench

Thanks for reading/responding,this place is great!

That is definitely wrong. Also might be why wire burnt off F2 stud.

If there is a lot of carbon dust from the brushes, that could be causing the short and a thorough cleaning might fix the short.

Thats what I thought.

I cleaned it pretty good last night and it got a little bit better but I think the insulation is breaking down it looks real bad and pieces are falling off/out.

I think the best bet right now would be to look for a new/rebuilt one.

Any suggestions?

Bump.

I have found many replacement motors with 19 splines, but am striking out on this one.

Does anybody have any clue where I can find this style motor?

Or can the coupler on the rear axle be changed to fit a newer style motor?

many thanks.
