Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
I'm outside messing with it right now.
I have tried getting the timing right a couple of times this week. I feel like I have the timing really close. Earlier in the week I could get nice rpms in forward but would get a pretty bad backfire. I have it set right now to where I get good rpms in both forward and reverse with out a backfire. The problem that I have now is that I must choke the cart for a good while when I first try to run it. Once it fires up it will run good without the choke until I stop the motor. Then I must use the choke again to get it to run. This happens in both forward and reverse. |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
Maybe a stupid question, but would the fact that there is no air cleaner make any difference? This is what the cart came with. It also came with an oil bath setup, that doesn't have all of the parts to hook it up.

Really sounds like it is sucking air somewhere.
Have you gone through all the fuel supply system from check valve in tank all the way to the carb connection? Air is easier to draw than fuel it like a line of least resistance thing. Backfire: I recall reading something about the carb butterfly and the micro switch and it being important that the switch either opens before or after the butterfly closes. Maybe another will remember. Good luck. |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
When I first got the cart 6 or 7 years ago I changed the inline filter and went through the carb with a kit, but I don't think I have ever messed with the check valve.
I just took it down the street a couple of times and it by far running the best it ever has. I am getting some small backfires when it gets up around top speed. But I am feeling much more optimistic about this thing than I ever have. |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
I just went to the parts house and got new fuel line and a new filter.
After trying for about 30 secs to start it, it had not pulled any fuel into the filter. Once I choked it, it started pulling fuel in, but not very fast(I'm not sure how fast it should fill) It is not completely filling the filter, should it be? I ran the battery down before it would even try to fire up even choking it the whole time |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
***UPDATE***
I jump started it with my pickup, and after the initial choke to get it running it runs great. I stopped and started many times without the use of the choke I also put a new condenser on it and after many trips up and down the street, only had 2 little backfires. It is no rocket ship by any means, I'm just very happy that it is finally running Thanks to everyone for your help. |

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
I let it sit for an hour or so and tried to run it again.
It took about a minute of choking it to get it to fire up. Once it did, it ran great and I didn't need to use the choke anymore. I drove it up and down the street several times. When I was finished, I checked the fuel filter and it looked like there was no fuel in it at all. I don't get it. |

The fuel filter is never full. Sounds like you are losing the prime or you still have a small air leak in the fuel line or fuel pump. is the vacuum passage tight to atmosphere and open to the crankcase (no leaks)?

Re: 1970 D crank bearing help please
I was looking back through some old posts and I found one that talked about a carb gasket and 3 mount insulators. I know for a fact that my cart does not have that gasket, and the 3 insulators are not terrible, but are definitely not new.
Is there a chance that could be causing my issues? |
