Default No fire at coil

Guys, I just got an old G2 gasser. I have no knowledge on these gas engines. I have fire across the solenoid but not at the coil. I have traced the wires best i can and they all seem to be ok. The guy who gave it to me put on a new coil and solenoid. Please tell me that those $400 igniters never go bad and that there is an easy fix! If you cant tell me that...then the truth will be fine. Thanks

Buddy, I'm not a good trouble shooter, unless I have "hands on" but I would see if you have power on one side of the pedal switch when the key is switched on, and then you should have power to the other side when the throttle pedal is depressed. The pedal switch is located right at the throttle foot pedal, under the floor board cover by the pedals. Check for loose wire connections.

To check my knowledge, go to the sticky at top on this page "so your yami won't start".
This will walk you through simple steps to test the components and wiring.

Hope this helps!

This is all wrong if it turns over, but won't light off. If this is the case, check the 18 gage wire at the starter ground lug, to be loose or broken.

And my igniter was $130.

Yea, sorry, I forgot to say that it does turn over. It just will not fire. Starter turns and everything...just like it wants to start, just no fire getting to the coil. Where did you get that igniter? Mine is the box with the male prongs, not the one with the harness attached. I will check for more broken wires or loose connections also. Thanks

Now you need to see if you have spark at the spark plug. Your suppose to use a "dynamic spark tester", to ensure you won't damage the igniter. About $5. at Auto Zone.

When mine had no spark, it was before I knew about this sight. I took both, the ignition coil and the igniter box to the Yamaha shop. They told me there was no test for the igniter. And the coil tested good. I bought an igniter there at Yamaha at that price. Mine is a G8, which is a different igniter than what yours uses, but I wouldn't think much price diff.

My igniter measures about 3" square and about 3/4" high, black box with wires coming out of it with a jack on the end of the wires.

From what you wrote, It sounds like a simple switch problem. Since there are 2 ways to shut down an ignition circuit you need to know which method your cart used. Grounding method on the primary side of the coil. Or turning off the 12v to the igniter. Check across your switches with a volt meter. Closed "0" volts. With power on, there should be no voltage across a closed switch. Get a good wiring diagram and follow it from source to switch to switch and so forth. Most electrical problems are from just bad connections, dirty switch contacts, or parts out of adjustment. Try a new spark plug too.

Rice, did you check the small 18 gauge wire from the ground lug on the starter? It goes into the wire harness right there in front of the starter. I understand there is a connector there, and corrosion sets in. I replaced that ground connection with a new ground lug on starter and new bullet connectors(both male and female) going into wire harness. Mine was starting to go bad.

Then get Technoid to tell you how to test the crank trigger (what ever its called) under the fly wheel. I believe it is tested with ohms.

By the way, cute daughter!!
