Power drive spring
I want to buy the "more torque" spring for the secondary clutch. I am absolutely shocked at $75 for a $10 spring. Who is the best source for these parts?

Re: Power drive spring
The best one is the Yamaha spring for the lifted UMAX (PN: 90508-45849]. It is something like $14. The huge heavy white spring sold on the internets is too stiff, and results in worn-out or broken clutch parts.

Re: Power drive spring
Its not just the white spring from ebay thats to stiff. I recently bought one from a site sponsor and it was a complete waste of money. Driving around at 20mph with the motor red lined. The umax spring seems to be the way to go.

Re: Power drive spring
I have to recommend the UMAX spring also, I put the white spring in and was not impressed.

Re: Power drive spring
In my diesel G1 I used the G2 spring and it works just fine. Engine is governed at around 3000 rpm. Secondary is completely closed at 3/4 throttle.
Now if I could just get my memory to work half as good as that clutch. |

Re: Power drive spring
Guys, I have used and rated the umax spring highly for over 5 yrs! I didn't think my car could run much better. I just recently installed the Plowman's performance kit in my G8. That included a machined secondary sheave, HD helix spacer with the yellow spring and his shorter belt! To finish, the kit came with his performance muffler and jetting to go in the carb. Is it expensive, yes, but the performance improvement is felt throughout the power band!! I use this cart at over 7000ft elevation and it runs stronger there as well!!
IF you use your cart in hilly country, you will notice great grade brakeing ability as well!! To say the least, I'm VERY happy with my carts performance!! The Plowman yellow spring isn't that much stiffer than a umax, Its just his combination that makes everything work!! It doesn't cost anything to call Don Plowman and talk to him about his set up!! He's very easy to talk to!! |

Re: Power drive spring
Or do you mean a Drive cart? They might be different iirc they have the Team clutches. All the older yamaha can use a umax. I just took one out of my G9 and tried a stock spring due to tuning a 94c on it. The umax works really well it keeps more rpm at low speeds top end is similar to stock. Spring is preload adjustable and much longer and stronger than stock spring. I posted pics here someplace. Plowmans has some of, maybe the best setups out there for yamahas. I have a clone in my cart and could not get enough rpm out of the stock primary but the 94c was way off and still tuning on it. Not sure if I will need the umax or not once I figure it out.

Re: Power drive spring
Plowmans is great, but I'd also highly recommend the umax spring if you can put it on and just want to give your cart more offroad zip. It works. I'd also recommend the HD kevlar belt from CPP it helps too, and a cut secondary sheave also will give a lower initial gear so it takes off harder and better on hills or towing....but the sheave does not change things at speed the spring does. The belt is HD but also a little wider so it helps it get a slightly lower gear on take off. I was running a cut sheave, HD belt, and a umax spring it worked great. Put a clone in and it still worked great. With this new clutch I'm trying to tune it and wanted to go stock to help do that because I don't know what the secondary has to be tuned to (while I change spring/weights in the primary). It all worked great with the stock primary.
