It is stated that double or as alot of people call tripple towing is not legal in the state of Florida. It is also not listed as being legal in the state of Alabama. I had several state troopers follow me but they never even looked at me. I was nervous the whole trip. It was my first time to tow double and I was going into a state that it was illegal in. I made it this trip without incident.

For my hitch on the back of my fiver, I bought a receiver tube from Northern Tool that was 48 inches long, and enough 2 inch by 2 inch by .250 wall square tubing to make two cross bars between the frame rails. The receiver tube is welded to the two cross bars, and the two cross bars are welded to the frame rails of the fiver. It pulled great and was easy to build.

One final thought on double towing, Do not attempt it in the north east. Those states do not like it from the rumors I have heard.
We went to the Daytona Beach area in FL this past summer, pulling the Jeep. I was also a little on edge since I knew that it wasn't accepted in that state. We made it down there fine and when on the way back, we got almost to Jacksonville. I pulled in to refuel. An arrogant patrol pulled in and cut me off at the pump while I was heading to the island for diesel. He knew what he had done, so I guess he tried to prove that he could have been a bigger jerk than he already had proved to be, he told me that I would have to disconnect the Jeep and have someone else drive it on out of FL. I unhooked, got about 30 miles on the west side of Jacksonville and hooked it back up and came on home. Good thing about pulling the Jeep was that I didn't have to leave it on the side of the road. My wife was able to follow me.

Michael, just beware double pulling in FL. I got lucky most of the time, and if this one patrolman hadn't realized that he cut me off, I don't think he would have said anything, but there's that chance and I've read about others having to leave their second trailer on the road until they can get something else to tow it.

I then welded a receiver box with gussets, safety chain loops, and wired it for lights. It is rock solid. I have a 12 foot trailer that I haul my cart on behind the travel trailer and always load it so that it doesnt have much tongue weight so that it pulls better. I tow with an F150 and I cannot even tell its back there, and my mileage only suffered about half a MPG when double towing.

It works so good, I even built one for my buddy that goes to the races with us:

Thanks man! Yes, my father and I built it. Its a 5x12 foot trailer built like our car haulers. It has 10' flat, 2' dove tail and no sides. We used 16" Ford Ranger wheels with matching spare and added a diamondplate toolbox for the tongue.

Since your in the welding field how much would you charge for a bumper mod, I have to get some estimates which I'll probley use a machine shop that close to the police dept where I work but since you know what it takes what would be your price? just to get a ball park figure.Vince

A welding shop is going to charge you between $250 and $300. That is materials and labor. I had a friend of mine in Oklahoma City get charged $250 for one and another in Austin get charged $285. I bought a stalk of material (20 feet was about $125) and a couple of receiver boxes ($10 each), and had the 3 inch channel iron left from another job. It takes about as long to cut the old bumper off (our trailers have a sealed underbelly and you dont want to catch that on fire) as it does to build and install the new rear bumper. Some trailers will have more exposed frame rails and will be easier to weld to.

I was under the impression that Wisconsin trailers don't need a plate for in-state useage. Maybe that's old info?
